Veterinary Hospice & Comfort Care

Supporting your pet through it all.

What is Veterinary Hospice Care?

Modeled after human hospice medicine, Veterinary Hospice Care, also known as Comfort Care, is a service focused on maintaining pet comfort and quality of life until natural death occurs or a family elects humane euthanasia for a pet. This is a service that helps guide pet parents through caring for terminally ill or senior pets experiencing age related changes. This type of medical approach avoids invasive procedures and is focused on keeping pets comfortable in their homes. The goal is for pets to spend quality time with their families though we know that this time may be limited,

Why is Hospice Care important for pets and pet parents?

Hospice Care does not focus on finding a cure for a disease. It focuses on comfort, support and compassion. It focuses on a pet's happiness and continued participation in healthy interactions with their families.  Though this service does not include diagnostics, it does take previous findings into consideration. This provides comfort to the pet as well as their family when faced with difficult diagnoses and changes.

What services are part of Hospice Care?

Hospice care services include in-home consultations and exams, review of previous diagnostics, medical records, medications, and diets. In the home setting, evaluation of the home set-up to encourage ease of access and safe mobility is also considered. Treatments can include fluid therapy, injectable pain medications, vitamins, acupuncture and other supportive treatments based on clinical signs.

What if there is no cure?

No cure does not mean no treatment or support for a pet. There is always something we can do to provide comfort or even aid in a peaceful passing. This type of support is very important for families and pets as it helps maintain their very special bond until a pet's last moments..
